Marching Band is a performing ensemble that strives to develop ensemble and personal performance skills.  We will perform a number of times as a class ensemble.

As a member of the Marching Band your success depends on the work you put in, as well as the work other class members put in.  We are a TEAM!  Each individual is important to our success.  YOU are important to us!  We cannot achieve our potential if you do not participate fully in rehearsals and performances.  Consistent attendance is required; please schedule any necessary appointments (medical and other) outside of rehearsal and performance blocks.

As a member of the Marching Band you represent yourself, Colony High School, the Matsu Community, and the state of Alaska.  Please follow all rules or we will have no choice but to restrict your participation in performances.  Classroom rules include (but are not limited to) the following:

♪  No food, gum, candy, or liquid (other than water) in the band area (including practice rooms).

♪  Be prepared when class begins. (10 pushups per minute you are late)

                ♪  Be respectful. (24/7)

                ♪  Follow directions.

♪  NO PHONES, i-pods, or other electronics in class

♪  No smoking, alcohol, or drug use at any time.

♪  No fighting, use of vulgar and profane language, derogatory or negative remarks. This applies to social media, activities, and other areas which may take place outside of school, but which affect the school environment.

♪  Maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA, including a passing grade in all music classes.

Grades are an essential part of education and I take them very seriously.  In addition to maintaining a passing grade in this class, you are expected to maintain at least a 2.000 GPA in your other classes to participate in the extra-curricular aspects of the class. Eligibility is checked at the beginning of the semester for Marching Band. The following section describes the grading policy with some brief explanation.

35%      Attendance and participation in all performances (Including festivals, community events, sporting events, competitions, concerts, dances, assemblies, plays, school events, pep-assemblies, and any other conceivable type of playing for an audience that the band is involved in) .  Each performance is worth 100 points.  25 points are awarded for arriving on time.  50 points are awarded for learning your music well and performing with the group.  The final 25 points are awarded for staying until the end of the performance and helping to clean up.

If you are absent, there is no makeup available.  Missed performances will only be excused if there was an emergency or a pre-existing conflict which Mr. Burton approved.  Approval will only be given in extreme cases with at least two weeks of notice.

10%     Stand Etiquette.  During the games, you are expected to cheer for Colony, be energetic, be focused on the game and the music, STAY IN UNIFORM, wear your raincoat if it is raining, and tell your friends you are in class.  You are performing!  Friends are not allowed to sit in the band. If you leave your spot, remove your uniform, change the octave or part for your music, refuse to play, or otherwise don’t participate, you will lose all 100 points for that game and may be suspended from future performances.

30 %    Daily Class Work.  This portion of the grade reflects your effective use of rehearsal.  Refusal to participate in any activity (stretching, warming up, focalizing, etc.)  will result in lost points for that rehearsal.  It is dependent on your behavior, preparation, attitude, and participation.  Keep in mind that this is an elective class; if you do not want to participate you do not have to join the class.

20%     Playing Tests.  All playing tests will be memorized and from the music.

5%       Written Tests and other homework.  Written assignments may be given covering theory, history, instrument knowledge, and other aspects involving the band program.  Tests will cover the same subjects.

Please realize that neither you, nor I, are perfect.  I will treat you with respect and consideration and expect the same.  Many issues can be solved through respectful communication at appropriate times and in appropriate settings.

During the course of the class, you will be issued music, folders, and other supplies.  You are responsible for these materials.  Turn them in on time and do not damage them.  DO NOT USE PEN ON YOUR MUSIC.  Lost or damaged music must be paid for!

All students involved in marching band must pay a $200.00 participation fee as well as register on i-play.  There is also a $15.00 uniform fee to be paid to Knights Music Boosters.

Marching Band is a demanding course.  It requires physical ability as well as mental and emotional focus and determination.  Discipline is essential to our success as a group.  Be prepared to walk, run, do pushups, and other physical activities.  It is required that you have a physical exam done prior to practicing.  Bring water to all rehearsals (as well as bug spray and sunscreen if you need).  Marching band is an outdoor activity.  Appropriate dress for the changing Alaska weather and the situation is required.

To be successful we will need to work hard, maintain focus and discipline, and be positive!

Rain:  Over the course of the season, it is normal for us to be outside in the rain.  When you get wet, you are responsible for several things.  Make sure you dry everything BEFORE you put it away.  This includes your music, your binder, your gauntlets ($50.00), your hat ($65.00), your raincoat ($20.00), you uniform ($300.00, and your instrument.  Anything you put away damp or wet will start to mold and mildew and you will be financially responsible for it.  The folders are all brand new and must be returned in the same condition that they are issued in.  If your folder is damaged you are welcome to replace it.  Turning in a damaged folder will result in a $40.00 fine.

If you have questions or concerns feel free to contact me.  I can be reached at the school between 6:45 am and 4:00 pm daily.

It is required that each student join our band group.  We use “band” app to post online updates, reminders, and logistical things.  The URL for our group is https://band.us/n/a5a513B3Ad2fl.  You can download the app from the apple and android app stores or use your desktop by going to band.us and creating an account.  Our group name is Colony High School Band and Orchestra.

COIVD-19: Please be extremely flexible with schedule changes and cancellations this year.  At the beginning of every single practice/performance you will be asked if you have a cough, sore throat, fever, shortness of breath, or have been exposed to someone with the virus.  If you cannot answer NO to each question, please send me a message on the band app and DO NOT COME that day.
