MSBSD Diploma Options

The Mat-Su Borough School District offers three diploma options designed to support different student goals and post-high school plans. MSBSD graduation requirements reflect some of the highest standards in Alaska and are intended to prepare students for success after high school. Students may earn a Standard Diploma, Honors Diploma, or Honors with Distinction Diploma, depending on their coursework and academic goals.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian are determined by academic rank, based on the highest grade point average earned within the highest diploma achieved.

Diploma Options

Standard Diploma

Standard Diploma:

The Standard Diploma is the foundation for most MSBSD students. Students earn 25.5 credits across required subject areas including English, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and health. This pathway also allows students to explore career and technical education, fine arts, and world languages. MSBSD’s Standard Diploma reflects graduation requirements that exceed the state minimum.

Honors Diploma

The Honors Diploma is designed for students seeking additional academic preparation. Students complete 27 total credits, including additional coursework in science, social studies, and physical education, along with three credits of advanced study. Advanced study may include Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), dual college credit, or career and technical education (CTE) concentrator coursework. This pathway supports preparation for college, career, or both.

Honors with Distinction Diploma

The Honors with Distinction Diploma is intended for students who complete a broader and more advanced course of study. Students earn 27 total credits, including eight advanced credits, through a combination of college-level coursework, advanced academics, world languages, JROTC, and CTE concentrations. This diploma reflects a high level of academic and applied preparation.
