Early Childhood - Ages 3-5

The MSBSD Special Education Office offers programs designed for qualified students in Early Childhood. Below you will find district programs, partnerships and other resources geared for students aged 3-5.

Early Childhood Special Education Preschool

Students ages 3-5 with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) can receive services in an Early Childhood Special Education Preschool.

Services are determined by the IEP team. Children are identified through transition from Infant Learning, or through the Child Find identification process. If you are moving to the area and your child has a current IEP, please contact the Special Education Office.

For the 2024-2025 school year, programs will be located at: Big Lake Elementary, Butte Elementary, Colony Middle School, Cottonwood Creek Elementary, Finger Lake Elementary, Meadow Lakes Elementary, Shaw Elementary, Sherrod Elementary, Swanson Elementary, Tanaina Elementary, Goose Bay Elementary, Iditarod Elementary, Larson Elementary, Machetanz Elementary, Teeland Middle School, Sutton Elementary, Talkeetna Elementary, Trapper Creek Elementary, and Willow Elementary.

Each program is staffed with an Early Childhood Special Education teacher and paraprofessionals. Students can receive the related services on their IEP on site (Speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.) Special transportation is provided. All early childhood programs in the Mat-Su Borough School District use Creative Curriculum, as well as Second Step, a social emotional curriculum.

Child Find

Screening for educational and physical needs for children.

Child Find includes a screening to identify any educational or physical needs that must be addressed to enable the child to fully benefit from an educational program. Children with disabilities protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act may require special support services that can be provided through the Mat-Su Borough School District. A Child Find team screens the child in areas of speech and language development, pre-academic skills, gross and fine motor skills, vision, hearing, social/emotional development, and general health.
