Mr. Shawn Dick
Welcome to the website for Susitna Valley's US Studies, World History, US Government, and English 9 classes. This is my first year teaching at Su Valley High School, and I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to join the local community! In December 2013, I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in History and a minor in Anthropology from the University of Southern Indiana (Evansville, Indiana). I worked as a substitute teacher from 2014-2018. Shortly thereafter I completed a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher’s Preparation program from the University of Southern Indiana. I’ve worked seasonally in Alaska as an outdoor educator from 2015 to the present. A majority of my time was spent working in Denali State Park as a Naturalist. I am a history buff, but I also enjoy natural history, backpacking, yoga, canoeing, playing banjo, and fishing. I am thankful and fortunate to be a part of the team at Su Valley.
We rarely ever use a textbook and a majority of my classwork is available on Google Classroom or APEX. This school year APEX will be incorporated into all of my classes. If a student misses class due to illness, sports, or travel, they can stay up to date with the coursework through the APEX platform and/or Google Classroom. In all classes, students will learn how to think critically and apply what they learn to their lives. Students will not spend their time memorizing facts and names. Parents, I welcome your input and suggestions at any time. Please, monitor academic progress online and feel free to contact me via email or the phone number provided above. If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to reach out. If you are interested in seeing the syllabus for a particular class, please click on one of the links provided below.
