Mr. Simon Nashold
Hello and welcome! I am excited to be a part of Burchell High School and to share my love of learning with students. Here's a little bit about me: I grew up on a farmstead in north-central Illinois and spent much of my childhood playing outside, raising various different pets and orphaned wild animals, exploring, working outside and learning about nature. In 1998, I came to Alaska looking for natural beauty and adventure and I've been here ever since. I am the husband of a Yup'ik woman and the father of four boys who are growing like weeds. While science is my main "thing," I have many interests, and I have taught a little bit of everything over the course of my career, including math, language arts, writing, U.S. history, world history, meteorology, biology, physical science, earth science, Spanish, and music. Some of the things I like to do include playing with my kids, camping, fishing, hunting, tinkering, problem-solving, gardening, food preservation, food gathering, building things, travel, reading, learning, trying new things, etc. One of the new projects I have taken on most recently is learning how to grow fungi, with the goal of producing edible mushrooms and also growing useful, biodegradable items, like a lightweight and strong cooler for fishing, insulation for my sauna or a small rowboat. I believe in embracing natural curiosity and making learning a life-long habit.
