Mrs. Amber Thurman
I am Mrs. Thurman, and I am the IAES teacher here at Mat-Su Day School. IAES stands for "Interim Alternative Educational Setting." This is a program of choice for students in grades 6-12 who have been suspended for 10 days or more. Through this program, we provide an opportunity for students who have an IEP or a 504 plan to keep working towards their IEP goals and objectives.
IAES and the Day School make every effort to implement the existing course schedule a student was working through prior to suspension. We work hard to communicate with the teachers at the student's boundary school so the student can keep pace and return as seamlessly as possible once their suspension has ended, and we endeavor to help students raise failing grades so that credits can be recovered.
Communication is key: students are sent home every day with a point sheet that documents their acheivement for the day. Teacher notes are written on the back so that parents can see the positives and struggles their child encountered throughout the day. Parents are encouraged to contact me if they have questions about their child's progress, and I make an effort to call parents periodically to maintain that school/home relationship.
There are no bad kids, just bad choices. We endeavor to help ensure improvement in decision-making so students can be successful.
