Hello and welcome to Mrs. Powell's webpage.  I am happy that you've stopped by and I hope you find this webpage helpful and informative.  It is my sincere pleasure to be your child's art teacher this year and I look forward to learning alongside each and every one of the students in our classroom.

I was born and raised in Alaska, and I'm a graduate of Wasilla High School.  I hold three college degrees in Art History, Education, and a Masters of Education.  I will be graduating with my second Masters Degree, this one in Art & Design from the University of Northern Colorado, in the summer of 2020.

In addition to my formal schooling, I am a National Board Certified teacher and an active advocate for the vital role of the arts in education.  I also serve as a member of the Curriculum Council for the Matanuska Susitna Borough School District.

I am a wife of 24 years and mother of two young adults. We have two labrador retrievers who keep us busy and we enjoy playing outside with our dogs, attending baseball games around the country, and spending time with family and friends.  I love photography, encaustic painting, and mixed media art, and I'm always creating something fun.

Hands on, experience-based learning tasks are at the core of my educational approach and are the basis of many of my art lessons.  I believe in making mistakes, in trying new things, in getting a little dirty in the process, and in the infinite power of trying with all you have. Art at Colony Middle School is about experimentation and trying new mediums. In doing so, students dare to fail greatly, and in the process we all learn more.

I have an open door policy and I would love to welcome your participation in the learning experiences in our classroom.  Feel free to stop in! We will put you right to work!
