Hello and welcome to Mrs. Powell's webpage.  I am happy that you've stopped by and I hope you find this webpage helpful and informative.  It is my sincere pleasure to be your child's art teacher this year and I look forward to learning alongside each and every one of the students in our classroom.

I was born and raised in Alaska, and I'm a graduate of Wasilla High School.  I hold four college degrees in Art History, Education, Masters of Education, and Master of Arts. In addition to my formal schooling, I am a National Board Certified teacher and an active advocate for the vital role of visual arts in education.  I also serve as a member of the Curriculum Council for the Matanuska Susitna Borough School District.

I am a wife of 25 years and mother of two young adults. We have a sweet labrador retriever who keeps us busy and we enjoy playing outside with our dog, attending baseball games around the country, and spending time with family and friends. I am a working artist with a business of my own outside of teaching. I love photography, encaustic painting, and mixed media art, and I'm always in the midst of creating something.

Hands on, experience-based learning tasks are at the core of my educational approach and are the basis of many of my art lessons.  I believe in making mistakes, in trying new things, in getting a little dirty in the process, and most importantly, in the infinite power of trying with all you have. Art at Colony Middle School is about experimentation and trying new mediums. In doing so, students dare to fail greatly. In the process we all learn more.

I have an open door policy and I would love to welcome your participation in the learning experiences in our classroom.  Feel free to stop in! We will put you right to work!
