Substitute Handbook

Per Alaska State Statute, a portion of your wages and a matching employer contribution are made pre-tax to the Alaska Supplemental Annuity (SBS) Plan instead of contributions to Social Security. These contributions, plus any change in value (interest, gains and losses), are payable to you or your beneficiary at a future date. It may also reduce your Social Security Benefits under the Windfall Elimination Provision. Empower Retirement Services is the Plan Administrator for the SBS Plan.

We’re happy to share that there are now no limits on the number of hours you can work in your substitute role, whether you’re teaching, supporting administrative functions, or handling custodial duties! Substitutes who work a minimum of 100 hours or more in a calendar month are still eligible to receive the incentive bonus of $200.

Health Insurance Coverage:

Eligibility will be determined based on a standard 6-month measurement period. To qualify, you must work an average of 130 hours per month during this time, as defined by applicable regulations.

Substitute Step

Hourly increase all positions

*To qualify for a step increase, a substitute must work at least 500 hours during the fiscal year.

Effective November 1, 2024, a substitute salary schedule has been implemented to recognize experience in a substitute position with the District which allows for experience credit for up to three years. Substitutes will be compensated based on one of the salary ranges as outlined below:

To qualify for a step increase, a substitute must work at least 500 hours during the fiscal year. To request a salary advancement, please complete the Substitute Salary Advancement Request form. Requests received prior to November 30, 2024, will be retroactive to November 1, 2024. The deadline to request salary advancement for the 2024 – 2025 school year is January 31, 2025. The step increase will be effective for the payroll in which the request was received.
