AHERA Compliance Program

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Program ensures that all district facilities comply with federal regulations for the management of asbestos-containing materials in schools. This program is designed to protect the health and safety of students, staff, and visitors by maintaining rigorous standards for asbestos identification, monitoring, and abatement.

Key components of the AHERA Program include:

  • Asbestos Management Plans: Comprehensive documentation for each facility, detailing the location and condition of asbestos-containing materials, and outlining procedures for safe management.

  • Periodic Surveillance: Semi-annual inspections to monitor the condition of known asbestos materials and ensure ongoing compliance.

  • Three-Year Re-inspections: Full re-evaluation of all asbestos-containing materials every three years, as required by federal law.

  • Notifications: Timely communication to staff, parents, and building occupants regarding the presence and status of asbestos materials, as well as any planned abatement activities.

  • Training & Documentation: Records of staff training, contractor certifications, and compliance activities to ensure all personnel are equipped to manage asbestos safely.

  • Abatement & Response Actions: Procedures for safely removing or encapsulating asbestos materials when necessary, including documentation of all response actions.

The AHERA Compliance Program is managed in accordance with district policies and federal guidelines, and all records and plans are maintained through the MSBSD Facilities Compliance Program Coordinator.
