Kindergarten

According to Alaska Statute 14.03.080, any child who is five years of age on or before September 1^st of the current year is eligible to attend kindergarten.

However, the state allows districts to choose a later deadline. As a result, MSBSD permits any child who is five years of age on or before October 1^st of the current year to apply for early entry to kindergarten if they qualify per this criteria. The application deadline for early entry is July 15th.

Registration is the same for all grades, including kindergarten, with open registration beginning on July 1^st of each year.

Parents can apply for registration online through ParentVUE. Once there, they can either add their child as a new student or - if they have previously attended preschool through MSBSD - as an existing student.

During the registration process, new students must provide a birth certificate, as well as an immunization record in compliance with the State of Alaska School Immunization Requirements.

The first day of school for kindergarten students during the 2026 - 2027 school year is Thursday, August 20^th, 2026. Kindergarten at MSBSD is full-day.

The week of school prior to the kindergarten start date is reserved for Roll-In, a state-mandated assessment of every incoming kindergarten student. Schools will contact parents to schedule roll-in appointments, and parents should expect to spend up to an hour with their child and teacher at Roll-In.

Parents can use our boundary and transportation tools to find out what school their child is zoned to attend and whether/when bus service runs to them.

If you would like your child to attend a school they are not boundaried for, then you can submit a boundary exemption form before registering them.
