    August 2021:

Hello to all CMS music parents,

Greetings to all of you from CMS Music Department.   This is the August 2021 CMS Music newsletter.  The newsletter is sent out near the beginning of each month to tell parents what is coming up.  It is not just activities but also assignments and due date info.   So here are things coming up with the CMS music department.  Remember, you can get lots of info on my Website (go to CMS home page, click “Activities” and click “Music” or here is the link http://www.matsuk12.us/site/Default.aspx?PageID=7806 ).  Here are some of the CMS upcoming events.

    1. I want to HIGHTLY RECOMMEND you join me on the CMS Music Open House meeting on Aug. 23 at 7PM.   Already there are changes to the music schedule/events that we will be discussing (even after I have published everything).   I want to give you an update and overview of classroom procedures, safety procedures, grading policy, activity for students to get involved and of course performances issues.  PLEASE try to attend (this is for both new families and returning families).  The link is below.
    2. The Colony MS Music Booster is still looking for a president and vice president.  The CMS Music Boosters is a parent group that supports music and performing arts here at CMS.   More info will be shared on Aug. 23.
    3. Practice Charts will start up the week of Aug. 29.
    4. Jazz Band (for advance 7th-8th grade band) and Jazz choir (for 7th-8th grade choir members) starts up the week of Aug. 23.  Jazz band is on Monday and Wednesday, Jazz choir is on Tuesday and Thursday.   Practices are at 6:45-7:15 AM.  Sign up will be available the first week of school.
    5. The Theater Department has Moana Jr. starting up.  Students need to sign up with Mr. Wargo or myself.  They need to be at audition practice on Aug. 20 and/or 23 from 2:30-4PM in the band room.  They will get the audition material, rehearse it and sign-up for audition times.  Auditions are on Aug. 24 after school.  Cast will be posted that night and the official practices start on Aug. 25.
    6. Syllabus Contract and Instrument Contracts/$ due ASAP.  Students do not need their instruments on the first day of class.  They will need them on Aug. 20.
    7. Reminder that all equipment MUST go home every night as I have to disinfect my locker room each night.  Student can lose their locker privileges if they fail to do that.   Thank you.

I want to thank you for your time and I hope everyone has a great start up to the new school year.   I hope to see you on Aug. 23.   Have a wonderful day.

     Sept. 2021

Hello to all CMS music parents,

Greetings to all of you from CMS Music Department.   This is the September 2021 CMS Music newsletter.  Things are rolling here at CMS.  It has taken a couple days, but we are mostly organized and progressing forward.   Here are things coming up with the CMS music department.  Remember, you can get lots of info on my Website (go to CMS home page, click “Activities” and click “Music” or here is the link http://www.matsuk12.us/site/Default.aspx?PageID=7806 ).

    1. To all Advance Band (with jazz band) and 6th-8th Choir parents: We are officially combining our first concert onto Monday, Sept 20 here at CMS (choir is being move one day earlier). As described at the Open House meeting, it will be a staggered concert in the cafeteria area.   Choir call will be at 6:30 PM with the performance starting at 6:45 PM.  It should be done about around 7PM.  Advance Band and Jazz Band call will be at 7PM with their performance starting at 7:15 PM.  Dress for the concert is Black pants/skirt and white dress shirt.
    2. Beginning band students will not have a concert till November.
    3. Orchestra will have their concert on Oct. 4 with call at 6:30 PM. Concert will start at 7PM.
    4. If a student is sick on the day of concert, they will have a make-up concert scheduled when they get back. Concerts are mandatory for all students.
    5. Students will receive 2 wrist bands to give to family members (not friends) to attend a live concert. Please be aware.
    6. The Colony MS Music Booster next parent meeting is Oct. 5 at 7PM on Zoom. With a new board (and thank you to the parents who stepped up to help), we will be starting to look some activities and fundraising ideas to help the department.  We could use ideas so if you can attend, please do.  Zoom link is below.
    7. Practice Charts will start up the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4. Charts are weekly assignments.  They are worth 35 pts each week for 2 hours of practice (and yes they get partial points for charts with 0-119 minutes).  The Aug 29 chart is due after Labor Day.   Charts go from Sunday to Saturday every week.  Students turn them in to the “Snoopy” box every week.  They need full name, the date of the week they practiced, times for each day, total time added up and a parent signature.  All of this is needed to be graded.  Students can practice more than 2 hours if they want and put that on another chart if they are going to be gone on another week (like a vacation).  Charts can be turned in up to 2:30 PM on the last day of the quarter (or what ever the final call is).  I won’t take them past 2:30 PM even if they are sick from school.  They have all quarter to turn in stuff even if they choose to turn it in at the end only.
    8. A copy of the practice charts is included in this email.
    9. Mid-Term grades for 1st quarter are Sept. 17.
    10. Jazz Band is going from 6:45 AM-7:15 AM on Monday and Wednesday. Jazz choir has been removed as we did not have enough interest.
    11. Moana Jr. is going on. We are in practice.  Ticket info will come out soon.
    12. If any parent can help with sewing costumes stuff for Moana, we could use a little more help. We have a parent who is volunteering (and does not have a child at CMS).  I have some of my theater parents, but we could use little more help.
    13. Reminder that all equipment MUST go home every night as I must disinfect my locker room each night. Student can lose their locker privileges if they fail to do that.   Thank you.
    14. I uploaded a video that gave an overview of the Aug. 23 parent open house meeting. It was placed into every music google classroom for families.  Just have your child log onto their google class and you can watch it.
    15. Google class codes are below. All students need to be on it.  It will be the place they will go for info about classes if CMS is closed and we are doing school virtually.
