Class and Activity DescriptionsBand: This class is for 6th to 8th grade students who are interested in instrumental music. The class works on developing skills on the student’s instrument while learning about many aspects of music (notation reading, history, playing in different styles, etc...). The class meets everyday. Please note that is class is a year long. Students who sign up for Band will have the choice of Physical Education or Exploratory Classes and enrichment classes.Choir: This class is for 6th to 8th grade students who are interested in vocal music. Students will be working on Hand Bells to learn to read basic notation. The class works on developing skills of singing while learning about many aspects of music (notation reading, history, singing in different styles, etc...). This class also has hand bells as part of the instruction (working on reading music). The class meets everyday. Please note that is class is a year long. Students who sign up for Choir will have the choice of Physical Education or Exploratory Classes and enrichment classes.String Orchestra: This class is for 6th to 8th grade students who are interested in string instruments (Violin, Viola and Cello, Upright Bass). The class works on developing skills on the student’s instrument while learning about many aspects of music (notation reading, history, playing in different styles, etc...). Beginning and Advanced students are in the same class, but we do a lot of small group work to address individual needs. The class meets everyday and is year long. Students who sign up for Orchestra will have the choice of Physical Education or Exploratory Classes and enrichment classes.For the 2020-2021 School Year. From the main office: Band/Choir/Orchestra students will be able to choose PE or Exploratory classes (art, consumer science, STEM/Tech ed, Health)
Extra Music activities for Band and Choir Students:Tri-M Honor Music Society: This is a community service organization for music students thatwant to become more active in their home communities by using their musical talents forothers. This is open to all 6th-8th grade band and choir students (with some GPArequirement and an application that must be filled out)Jazz Band: For 7th-8th grade band, choir, orchestra students only. This group learns about how to play jazz andmore modern music.Jazz Choir: For 7th-8th grade choir, band, orchestra students only. This group learns about how to sing in jazzand modern music.
Steel Drum Ensemble: 8th grade only class (already pre-selected from last year). This group
learns how to play the music from the Islands. Students must be in either band, choiror orchestra.
Pep Band: For 6th-8th grade band students. It is a group that plays for Varsity Boys and Girls
Basketball games. No requirements for playing. Fun, fast and exciting music to cheer on our teams.Contest: For 6th-8th grade band and choir students who wish to expand theirperformance abilities by learning a solo or small ensemble piece and performing it for ajudge during the contest.Small Performances: For 6th-8th grade music students. Throughout the year, there aremany activities and opportunities to perform in school and in the community. This includeshand bell ensemble and singing the National anthem at events.Honor Band and Choir: For 6th-8th grade band and choir students. This is an auditioned groupmade up of member from all the Valley Schools.Drama/Musical: This activity is with the CMS drama department.Students will learn to sing in a Broadway style for this show. Auditions start early in theschool year.
Guitar Group: For 6th-8th grade CMS students. This is an enrichment class to introduce and
improve guitar and E. Bass players.Talent Show: CMS is offering its first talent show. It will be Dec. 16 at 7PM (auditions are Dec.9), with the winners performing for the school assembly on Dec. 18. There will be
auditions due to limited space for the event.
Mr. Lambert’s enrichment classes.Beginning Band: Course Description: This class is for 6th-8th grade students who are at CMS. Music students and non-music students can take this class. The class is to teach students how to play basic band instruments (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone). Saxophone and Percussion may or may not be offered due to the amount of students already playing these instruments. This enrichment class is a semester long and students must be able to supply equipment and music books for the class. There are no additional charges, unless the student is renting an instrument from CMS (Baritones, maybe some other brass instruments).Mythology Class: Where do dragons come from? Did Beowulf or King Arthur really exist? Did "Troy" really fall to the "Greeks"? Did "Atlantis" really exist? Is the story you are reading real or myth? Where do mythological stories come from? In many of our stories, there are real historical events and people that these stories are based on. During this class, we will look at the "real" myths in storytelling. If you like mysteries, adventures, history and stories, then this class is for you.Musical Theater: This music class is for any student interested in learning the in’s and out’s of one of America’s original art forms (musical theater). Students will learn the history of musicals, work on singing in a Broadway style and and work on basic acting skills. Final project will be performing a scene from a show with acting, staging, choreographing, singing and costumes from a show.
Guitar Class: This music class is for students who play guitar (electric or acoustic) or electric bass. The class will be divided by ability levels and students will be working in groups to work on pieces of music to perform. Students will be working on proper technique, learn to read traditional music notation and TAB notation (chord symbols) and work in a team setting. Performances will be in class and possibly for other classes in our school.If you have any questions about these classes, please call me at 761-1517. REMINDER FOR THE 2020-2021 YEARS: Some of these activities may not happen. Students who are starting a new instrument may not get the exact start that would be normal if we are in an online schooling.
