    August 2023:

Hello to all CMS music parents,

Greetings to all of you from CMS Music Department.  I would like to welcome you to the 2023-2024 school year at Colony Middle School.  For those of you who are new to CMS, this email is the monthly newsletter that I send out near the start of each month to inform you of what is coming up.  So, I want to share some upcoming things with the CMS music department.  Remember, you can get lots of info on my Website (go to CMS home page, click “Activities” and click “Music” or here is my website  https://www.matsuk12.us/domain/9225 ).

Hello to all CMS music parents,

Greetings to all of you from CMS Music Department.  We have reaching the half way point for the school year and so new stuff is coming online.  Here is what is coming up this month.  Remember, you can get lots of info on my Website (go to CMS home page, click “Activities” and click “Music” or here is my website  https://www.matsuk12.us/domain/9225 ).

    1. Winter concerts are in February.  Band is Beb. 12, Choir is Feb. 13, and Orchestra is Feb. 15.  Call for all the concerts is 6:30PM.  Dress is Black bottom and white top for all groups.  Please have your students at the school on time so we can start on time.
    2. The Colony MS Music Booster parent meeting is on Jan. 8 at 7PM on Zoom. Zoom link and working agenda are on this newsletter.
    3. 3rd quarter Practice Charts will start on Sunday, Dec. 17.  This quarter charts will run from Dec. 17 till March 2 (9 weeks, 315 pts)- Charts are weekly assignments.  They are worth 35 pts each week for 2 hours of practice (and yes they get partial points for charts with 0-119 minutes).  Charts go from Sunday to Saturday every week.  Students turn them in to the “Snoopy” box every week.  They need full name, the date of the week they practiced, times for each day, total time added up and a parent signature.  All of this needs to be graded.  Students can practice more than 2 hours if they want and put that on another chart if they are going to be gone on another week (like a vacation).  Charts can be turned in up to 2:30 PM on March 6.  I won’t take them past 2:30 PM even if they are sick from school.  They have all quarter to turn in stuff even if they choose to turn it in at the end only. Please be aware that if a student turns them in at the last minute and they are not filled out correctly, they will not be graded, and I can’t return them to the student for them to repair them.
    4. Extra credit is going as well.  If a student attends a concert or arts event, have them bring a ticket or program to me and they will get extra credit.
    5. There are no official practice charts for X-Mas break (Dec. 24-30 and Dec. 31-Jan 6).  If a student practices over the break and turns in one or both of these charts, they are worth extra credit each (25 pts).
    6. Steel Drum for 8th grade are on Monday, Wednesday and some Thursday and Tuesday from 2:30 PM-4PM. Trinidad trip is also coming in January. So be aware.
    7. Tri-M music honor society would like to congratulate the following students for making it in: Matthew Wilson, Josephine Kelley, Betty Schmidt, Alexis Semonin, Macer Allen and Makenzie Barba.  We will have a meeting on Jan. 12 from 2:30-3:30PM.
    8. There will be a sub in my classroom for Jan. 25-Feb. 1.  Students are expected to sign in (first and last name is required) on the attendance, follow directions, work on the assignment and turn it in at the end of class (all of my sub assignments are done in class-THEY MAY NOT TAKE THEM HOME FOR HOMEWORK).   Students need to be respectful and helpful.  They need a pencil, instrument, music and music books.  If they don’t follow these policies, they will receive an SRC when I return.   Students will continue to rehearse music for the concert with Ms. Wetherell (building sub and a musician as well).  Students will be filling out an evaluation at the end of the class each day that will be graded for them to earn their weekly grade. It will be filled out and then returned to Ms. Wetherell.
    9. Solo/Ensemble contest lessons will be starting in Jan.  Contest is Mar. 4 at CMS.  Registration material will be sent home in January.
