    Assignments

Every 2 weeks, students will be assigned work.  This work can be done right away or can be spread out over the two weeks.  There are 3 components of work for students this semester in English Language Arts 8.

    1. Quill.org – These assignments ask students to proofread paragraphs and work on grammar.  There will be 2 assigned every two weeks.
    2. Apex – Students will be assigned roughly one unit in Apex per month, so that work will be divided between the available weeks of the month.  Sometimes this will mean 2 lessons per two weeks, and other times this will mean 3 lessons every two weeks.
      1. Quizzes – Students have the opportunity to take quizzes 2 times before the quiz will lock.  Students need to earn a 70% to pass the quiz, and if they don’t, students should email me with a copy of the notes that they took over the lesson.  Students are also welcome to complete the study guide to use as their notes.
      2. Study Guides – These are not mandatory, but if you would like a paper copy, there are copies available for pick up at the front office during normal business hours.
      3. Tests – Students need to let me know when they are ready for their unit tests.  Unit tests may be taken during any scheduled Zoom meeting time.  If another time is needed, the student just needs to email Mrs. Roberts to arrange a better time.  Students may use their notes on any test given throughout the term, but students will be required to Zoom in to ensure that students aren’t receiving help from other people.
    3. Reading Comprehension Practice – This assignment will be located in Google Classroom.  It will entail students reading a 2 page passage, taking a multiple choice quiz, and the completing one other activity regarding the reading.  These activities will vary, but students will be practicing citing textual evidence, writing paragraph responses to topics, gathering more information on the topic, or other relevant reading comprehension skills.  There will usually be a video posted with instructions on how to complete these assignments should students have questions.

As always, I am available via email or phone to answer questions and help your student.  If there is anything I can do to make things run smoother for you and your family, please let me know.

    2. Romeo and Juliet - Apex currently wants students to read Macbeth during English 1, but our high school has asked us to read Romeo and Juliet instead.  Macbeth is read in English 2.  As such, students need to go to Google Classroom to complete Unit 1 which is Romeo and Juliet.  If you have questions about this, please let me know.  I have deleted Macbeth from their Apex curriculum.
    3. Extra Credit: Quill.org – These assignments ask students to proofread paragraphs and work on grammar.  If students want additional grammar practice, they can email me, and I will assign them items to complete.
