All About Miss Durbin
I am a born and raised Alaskan. I attended the University of Alaska Anchorage where I graduated with Cum Laude honors and earned my Bachelors of Arts degree in K-6 Elementary Education. I later attended Walden University where I earned my Masters degree in K-8 STEM Education. This will be my second year teaching at Big Lake, first in fifth grade, and I could not be more excited!
I believe in creating a community of learners where each student feels safe, valued, and accepted. The learning environment is enriched and more valuable when students are able to collaborate with each other in order to create new ideas and self-discover through a multitude of experiences and opportunities in the classroom. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe, caring, ridicule free environment. Each student should be looked at as an individual and be able to learn the way that fits him/her best.
I enjoy working with children, watching the “light bulb” go off, and seeing the excitement in their eyes when they finally understand a concept. Helping students understand that they can be successful is a great feeling that I get to experience each day. I am so excited to partner with my students' families to help their children grow in their education journey.
When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy being outside in the summers whether it's hiking, fishing, traveling, or just sitting on my porch soaking up the sun. During the winters, I enjoy staying warm while reading or watching movies.
