Ms. Carla Swick
I was born and raised in Palmer, Alaska where my true love of language, other cultures, and people began in high school through Palmer's Sister City Program with Saroma, Japan. A three-week home stay and high school exchange to Saroma ignited a desire to explore the world. After graduating from Palmer High School in 1988, I studied in Gnosjo, Sweden for one year as an AFS exchange student. I then majored in Secondary English Education and minored in Japanese Language at the University of Wyoming. During university I studied abroad my junior year as a Rotary Scholar at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. After university graduation I was invited to return to Saroma to teach English in the town's middle schools and work as an educator and translator for the local school board. I taught in Japan for three and a half years and am now in my 21st year of teaching Japanese in the district. I am so happy to be back at the Home of the Moose with my J-LEAP co-teacher, Miharu Hayazaki! We will continue to build the PHS Japanese Program this year. We love learning alongside our students.
My goal as a high school teacher is to expose my students to new perspectives and opportunities and inspire growth. I want them to be critical thinkers, hard workers, and life-long learners. I believe travel can be one of the best educators so I organize and lead summer study trips to Japan and our sister school, Saroma High School. I also encourage students to apply for exchange scholarships.
When I am not teaching, you can find me playing in Alaska's outdoors with my husband Lance and our five-year old son, Billy. We love hiking, fishing, floating the Kenai, watching Kansas City Chiefs football games, and traveling the globe. I also love playing hockey on our Valley Women's team. I am looking forward to learning and growing with you in 2017-2018! Ganbarimashou -- Go MOOSE!
