    English 1

    Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

    English I is a comprehensive course that introduces the skills necessary to analyze and evaluate literature and/or evidence while emphasizing substantiating support in an argument for the young adolescent. The English I student will identify and analyze author’s intent for utilizing literary elements, devices, and tone. The course includes a variety of longer compositions including deeper revisions for style, tone, subtlety and transitions. The conventions of English are applied to increase the sophistication of sentence fluency. Proficient skills in the mechanics of the language are necessary in English I. Content vocabulary is significantly increased. The English I student will also experience impromptu speaking, advanced discussions, and reads aloud. High School English credit may be earned for this course.


    Language Arts 8

    Prerequisite: None

    8th grade Language Arts covers the 8th grade curriculum emphasizing the evaluation and analysis of the importance of the elements of literature. Writing instruction and assessment will be based on the 6+1 writing traits. Students will master the 5 paragraph essay and practice a variety of compositions to inform, describe, and persuade. A research project will be completed. The conventions of English will be applied to increase sentence fluency. Skills in the mechanics of the English language are studied and practiced throughout the course. Content vocabulary is increased using a variety of vocabulary strategies. The 8th grade English student will develop their skills in clear oral expression and alert listening.


    Language Arts 8, Advanced

    Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation and Assessment Qualification
    Advanced 8th grade Language Arts covers the 8th grade curriculum at an advanced and accelerated rate. Emphasis will be on analysis and evaluation of the importance of the elements of literature. Writing instruction and assessment will be based on the 6+1 writing traits. Students will master the 5 paragraph essay as well as a variety of compositions to inform, describe, and persuade. A research project will be completed. The conventions of English will be applied to increase the sophistication of sentence fluency. Proficient skills in the mechanics of the language are stressed in Advanced English. Content vocabulary is significantly increased. The Advanced 8th grade English Student will develop their skills in clear oral expression and alert listening.
