  • BOUNDARY EXEMPTIONS

    Boundary requests for the 2017//2018 school year will be accepted until May 1, 2017. Forms can be obtained from the MSBSD website or from the front office at any school. All students not in our boundary that are interested in coming to Houston Middle School next year will need to fill out a form and turn it in for approval. If your student is on a current Boundary Exemption for HMS, you will need to fill another one out for the next year for approval. Please contact Mrs. Aldeman at 892-9505 with any questions.         2016 -2017 School Report Cards to The Public

        Houston Middle School Parents,

        As a requirement of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, states and school districts must issue annual report cards to parents. The purpose of the report card is to provide parents with information about the district and their child’s school in terms of teacher qualifications, academic achievement, and school/district accountability.         HMS Announcements

        • Houston Middle School Families & Friends,

          The Borough Assembly is currently proposing a decrease to the per student funding for public education. In addition, it has come to our attention that an amendment to further decrease the Borough’s funding of education will be presented tonight, May 3rd.

          The proposed amendment will decrease educational funding by an additional $1.5 million. As a result, the next step in our district cuts will include an additional 12.5% in reductions to activities for a total of 25% reduction over this year. We have already received staffing cuts for next year and middle school classroom sizes will be at an unprecedented 32:1 ratio (research shows 24 or 25:1 to be optimal). This additional cut will result in the loss of school programs.

          The attached memo from our Superintendent, Dr. Monica Goyette outlines the potential reductions to student activities, educational programs, and staffing that are under review, and will impact our northern schools.

          There is a Matsu Borough Budget Meeting night, Wednesday, May 3 at 6:00 pm at the Assembly Chambers in Palmer. We are asking that you show up and speak out about funding education, and not approving further cuts that will impact our kids.

          If you are unable to show up, please call or write the Matsu Borough Assembly. This action is timely, and needs to be done ASAP. Contact information can be found here: https://www.matsugov.us/assembly

          Please also advocate in support of a Borough-wide Seasonal Sales Tax. This has been proposed by the District as an additional revenue source for education. We need the Matsu Borough Assembly to approve this tax for our schools.

          We need to advocate for our students. I appreciate the support many of you have shown for funding education and it is critical that all of us speak up now to prevent further erosion of school funding and the resulting activities and program cuts.

          School start/end times will remain the same for the 2016-2017 school year.
          Elementary schools time is 9:15 to 3:45.
          Middle/secondary schools time is 7:45 to 2:15.
          There are exceptions for northern schools:
          Willow start time is 8:20. Dismissal at 3:00 on M, Tu, Th, Fri & 1:40 on W.
          Talkeetna begins at 8:30. Dismissal at 3:05 on M, Tu, Th, Fri & 2:05 on W.
          Trapper Creek begins at 8:30. Dismissal at 3:00.
          Su Valley Jr/Sr High School begins at 8:30. Dismissal is at 2:54.
          Glacier View School begins at 8:30. Dismissal is at 2:56.
          If your child attends a charter school, confirm the time with your school.
