The Federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires schools to demonstrate progress each year in improving student learning.  Schools receive "Adequate Yearly Progress" (AYP) reports on an annual basis to help monitor both successes and areas needing improvement.

Every Alaska school must meet 31 performance targets to “make” AYP.  These targets are based upon the percentage of students in grades 3 through 10 who are proficient on state-mandated tests in language arts (reading and writing) and math.  Performance targets must be met on a school-as-a whole basis and in nine different student subgroups.  In addition, high schools must have a graduation rate of 56 percent, and 85 percent of all students must participate in state testing.  If just 1 of the 31 targets is missed, a school will not make AYP.

Under federal law, we must inform families of:

§          School Choice - their right to transfer their student to another school in the district that has met AYP

IF the family qualifies for free/reduce lunch

§          Supplemental Educational Services - tutoring and other supplemental academic enrichment services that are in addition to instruction provided during the school day.

Districts must provide families an option of at least 2 other schools, and provide busing for students who wish to transfer.  Students are not required to transfer.  Families are encouraged to consider their options carefully and weigh all aspect of their student’s education when making a decision.

Students enrolled in Burchell High School, Goose Bay Elementary, Knik Elementary, Houston Middle School and Valley Pathways School School are eligible for School Choice OR Supplemental Educational Services.

Your child must be eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and you must decline your option to attend another school to be eligible for supplemental education services.

Students enrolled in Butte Elementary or Tanaina Elementary are eligible for Supplemental Educational Services.
