Safe & Drug Free Schools
(Title IV)

The primary focus of Title IV, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is drug and violence prevention.  The purpose of Title IV is to support programs that:
  • Foster a safe and drug-free learning environment that supports student achievement.
  • Prevent violence in and around schools
  • Prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs
  • Involve parents and community
This law requires states to allow students who attend persistently dangerous schools to transfer to a safe school.  In addition, students who are victims of a crime at school may also move to another school.  Another provision is to report on school safety to the public.  Perhaps the main requirement of Title IV is to implement drug and violence prevention programs of demonstrated effectiveness at our schools.

Several of our district programs are: Michigan Model for Health, WhyTry Programs, Olweus Anti Bullying Program, Alcohol Education, and the Mat-Su Youth Court.

Each school in the Mat-Su Borough School District, reports discipline events via School Max.  The district generates reports which show areas of strength and need from year to year.  As a result, the school district is able to adopt effective programs to address the health and safety needs of our students. Below is a link to the Disciplinary Events reported from high, middle, & elementary schools in the Mat-su Borough School District.
